A grandmother seriously injured in a Dec. 8 car crash that claimed the life of her grandson continues to show improvement, while police investigators work to determined what happened on Saturday after dark in Rockingham.
Emma Williams’ condition was upgraded from fair to good condition on Tuesday, according to a spokesman for the University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Jody Williams, a 9-year-old fourth grade student at West Rockingham School, was a passenger in the car driven by Williams and was killed in the collision on East Broad Avenue (Business U.S. 74).
The Rockingham Police Department, with assistance from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, continues to investigate the crash, said Police Chief Billy Kelly.
Kelly has not released any names in the case.
Investigators are interviewing several witnesses who have come forward with information about the crash.
Kelly is being cautious about the information he releases to the public about this incident. “I don’t want people to come up to us giving us the same information I gave to the paper or the news stations,” Kelly said on Tuesday.
Kelly did confirm that a man and a woman in one vehicle were coming from the stoplight at the Pineridge Crossing shopping center, at 1788 E. Broad Ave., and that car collided with the victims’ car which “appeared to be coming from Lady Mary Lane,” sending the victims’ car into Richmond Memorial Park, a cemetery.
As of Tuesday, Rockingham police had not yet interviewed the grandmother.

While police continue to investigate the crash, the beginnings of a makeshift memorial have begun to appear where Jody died. Although spray paint that marks the ground where the car came to a stop remains, the dirt around the site appeared to have been raked. White flowers are arranged next to poinsettias that are surrounded by a stuffed monkey and two stuffed dogs wearing Santa hats.
The funeral for the boy will be 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, in the Chapel at Harrington Funeral Home, with the Russell Edwards officiating.
