The Metropolitan Opera in New York City will broadcast composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “La Clemenza di Tito” live to worldwide audiences on Saturday, December 1.
The Sunrise Theater in downtown Southern Pines will air the live production in high definition at 12:55 p.m.
Only two months before the coronation of Leopold II of Habsburg in Prague in September 1791, Mozart was chosen to compose a new opera for the occasion. He selected a libretto based on the historical figure of Emperor Titus Vespasian, who ruled Rome from 79 to 81 AD. The subject of an enlightened ruler successfully repressing a violent rebellion was considered very appropriate for a monarch coming to the throne so soon after the French Revolution. Not performed for many years, Mozart’s last work is now considered a masterpiece.
The New York Post reports that this elegant production is more than the sum of its excellent parts. Elina Garanca, “sleek and beautiful, with a lustrous voice” is a splendid interpreter of Sesto. She produces “luminous sounds that seem to linger suspended in the air like shining pearls. ” As Tito, Giuseppe Filianoti “soared to virile, commanding form,” and Barbara Frittoli “burned up the stage as the scheming Vitellia.”
The run time is two hours, 55 minutes. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased by calling the Sunrise Office at 910-692-8501 or ordered online at www.sunrisetheater.org. Tickets are also sold at the box office before each show.
