ROCKINGHAM — Even though the Richmond Senior boys and girls basketball teams are still two weeks away from the official season opener, they took to the court this weekend.
The boys traveled to Mallard Creek for three scrimmage games, while the girls headed to T.W. Andrews for a trio of contests this weekend.
Even though the squads returned with a combined 1-5 records in the exhibitions, boys coach David Laton and girls coach Victoria DeFrate felt good about the outing.
Laton’s team played without three starters from last year’s team — Josh Calhoun, Shydamion Ellerbe and Jordan Richardson — as well as top reserve Raheem Bowden. DeFrate was missing one of her squad’s top returning scorers, Kivana Keane.
“I am not putting too much stock into it because we only had seven guys,” Laton said. “We were missing two players because of football and another two were out because of injury. I thought we did some good things out there.”
Laton added his team lost to A.L. Brown and Mallard Creek and rebounded to knock off Mooresville.
DeFrate watched as her squad fell to West Charlotte, Davie County and T.W. Andrews.
“We have a long way to go,” the first-year coach said. “I am glad we stuck with them because all three of those teams are good.”
The girls team will have a scrimmage against Fairmont today at 7:30 p.m. in Raider Gymnasium. The junior varsity squad will take to the court an hour earlier against the Golden Tornadoes.
Bowden catch nominated for award
CHARLOTTE — Richmond Senior wide receiver Raheem Bowden’s touchdown reception against Sun Valley in the season opener has been nominated for Captain D’s Catch of the Year on the WBTV website.
Bowden reeled in a 21-yard pass from Brent Flowers between two defenders for a touchdown in the first quarter. It was the first of two scores for Bowden in the contest.

Ticket price set for Jack Britt game
ROCKINGHAM — The price of tickets for Richmond Senior’s third round clash with Jack Britt will be $7 per person it was announced Monday afternoon by the school’s athletic director Kevin Mabe.
