ROCKINGHAM — For just the third time this season, Richmond Senior walked into the locker room at halftime trailing its opponent.

Unlike the last time when the Raiders suffered their only loss — against Scotland — the team responded by scoring on their first three possessions of the second half en route to a 34-14 win over Fuquay-Varina in the second round of the 4AA playoffs Friday night at Raider Stadium.

“There wasn’t a speech,” Richmond coach Paul Hoggard said about the second-half turnaround. “The players knew the situation. It was a tough week. I thought they had a good week of practice, but there were other things that made it tough on the team. I thought they did a good job of overcoming it and played well in the second half.”

Richmond (11-1) rallied behind the play of quarterback Brent Flowers. The junior was responsible for two of the Raiders’ three second-half touchdowns. Flowers connected with Trent Bostick on a 12-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-two to put the Raiders up for good with 7:49 left in the third quarter. Flowers closed out the scoring with an 11-yard scamper in the opening moments of the fourth quarter.

Flowers completed 8 of 12 passes for 113 yards and added another 76 yards on the ground. Dakwa Nichols rushed for 133 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries.

Hoggard thought his offense played well against the Tigers, but was hampered because of errors.

“We stopped ourselves because of penalties or turnovers,” Hoggard said. “We got a little sharper in the second half. It seems like we had to beat a bunch of people there in the second half. I am really proud of how hard we played in the second half.

“I thought we did a good job on third and fourth down. Being able to convert those was very big for us tonight.”

While the offense was hitting its stride in the final 24 minutes, Richmond’s defense was doing the same. After surrendering 151 yards to Fuquay-Varina in the first half, the Raiders allowed just 97 the rest of the way.

The Tigers (7-5) recorded just four plays of more than 10 yards in their 52 offensive snaps. One of them was a 67-yard scoring run by quarterback Tyler Williams on the second play of the game. Williams finished with 115 yards on 14 carries and was 3-for-10 passing for 24 yards and an interception.

“On their two touchdown drives, we had people who were awful in carrying out their assignments,” Richmond defensive coordinator James Johnson said. “On their big run, we completely blew it. It should have been at best a 1- or 2-yard gain. Those are plays we have to make.”

The Raiders will play host to Jack Britt (11-2) next week in the Mideast pod final. The Buccaneers advanced after slipping past Hoke County 17-10.

“It would be great if they showed back up next week,” Hoggard said of the Richmond fans. “The following week we will probably be somewhere in the Raleigh area. That will probably be our last home game of the season.”

In the other game involving a Southeastern Conference school, Scotland, the defending 4A champion, cruised to a 56-27 victory over Lee County. The Fighting Scots will face E.E. Smith next week in Pate Stadium. The Golden Bulls routed Southeast Guilford 54-36.

cmeck71, You finally see what I have had to put up with for years now. Anyone who questions the status quo with the Raiders is branded a racist by the very people who really are. While the Raiders are probably around 90% black they only have 2 black position coaches and none with any kind of authority or leadership. On friday nights they are all but invisible and on JV nights they are totally invisible. This program needs to be dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century. Former black players don't come around this program because they are not welcomed. It's sad that it has progressed to this state but the blame has to start at the top. It's no wonder the coaches don't know what is going on in the locker room until trouble starts. This goes higher than the head coach and will not get any better until some changes are made! " Keepin On Watching ".

Your program is hiding the truth. Face it . Hoggard and your coaches cannot relate to the kids. How does a team 99% black not have not 1 black coach? . All the great Raider players from the past and not 1 is called back. I am not talking about the nobody players on youur staff. Think its one or 2 . Not the studs the Raiders had . Seems those grumpy old Republicans are losing the team . Let me say to any Raider parent reading this. If you want your son to get looks by division 1 coaches , they are not watching Richmond County football. Butler , Mallard Creek or any school in the Charlotte area is the place. Raider football only serves to enrich the elite boosters at Richmond. Look at your defense. What happened to the defenses that had fight like the ol leon Hope defenses that battled West Charlotte? Now you got who? James Johnson . What a joke. If you make it to the Final , we promise to only play our starters for 1 quarter . Butler 65 Richmond 12 Richmond how does it feel to have to be Scotlands Craiglist purchase 2 years in a row?

cmeck71...1)The team is NOT 99% Black. 2)The Raiders do have some Black varsity coaches. 3)Leon Hope coaches at Hoke now and his defense gave up 49 to the Raiders this season and 4)The Raiders already have had several players commit to D1 schools off of this team with possibly a few more to go.

I get tired of having to CORRECT your distorted facts, but thanks for clearing up the fact that you are a RACIST.....just as I thought!!!!

Where are you guys?? I mean, they really don't relate to the kids. Maybe someone should come interview the kids, former, recent and present players to see how they feel on the matter. And talk to some of the parents. Me being a former player of the sport, somethings just not right with this football program-some of these coaches needs to be removed, for the childrens sake. Even some of the board members. They are all friends, buddies. GET THEM OUT OF THERE

cmeck71, This coach does not have the ability to recruit from among 150,000 steudents as do the programs in Chatlotte do. Hoggard did not "call" out the fans neither did he call any kids awful. Please show us where he did.

Who were the kids kicked off the team and how many? I hear 13 to 14 players? Why is this story being hidden from the media? Why is Hoggard calling out your fans and why is a coach calling kids awful in the paper? Richmond is playing catch up ball. Butler would smoke you by 30.

Why are you so concerned with Raider football?

|
November 10, 2012
Coach said we had people who were awful in carrying out their assignments. That is certainly different than saying people were awful.

I think it was the 3rd time they have trailed at halftime, in Lumberton I think they trailed 10-0 at the half.

You are correct football#1 it was the third time. The score was 10-6 at halftime. Thanks.

Good Golly Miss Molly, it takes a lot of nerve to ask fans to show back up after what everyone witnessed last night. This team looked unprepared and not ready to play. Defensively we stunk it up and offensively we're still running the most boring, unimaginative plays I've ever seen. While the Scots are blowing away some pretty good teams, we are struggling with the also rans of bad Raleigh conferences. I wouldn't be worried about being somewhere in the Raleigh area after next week, If the Raiders don't get their act together, " Next Week Will Be Our Last Game ". This team and program is slowly being pulled under and you may look up and see no one in the stands. Wake up people!

I love reading your comments because they are so funny, you bash a team that only lost one game. With coaches that know exactly what they're doing and have a state championship under their belts. What title do you have? And no pee-wee games don't count.
