The First Baptist Church of Hamlet by Piggly-Wiggly will be letting the kids decide who decorated their car the best at their first trunk-or-treat event on Halloween.

From 6 to 8 p.m. this evening, parents and guardians can bring their little goblins and vampires to the parking lot at 208 Charlotte St. for a fun and safe experience.

Candy Martin, the associate pastor’s wife, said she expects a big turn-out.

“We plan on having 20 or more cars done up,” said Martin. “It’s the kids’ choice, they get to vote on which car they think is the best decorated. There will be lots of food and candy and other activities.”

Because Halloween fell on Wednesday this year, Martin said the Baptist Young Women thought the trunk-or-treat event was something the whole church could be involved in.

“We thought the church could take this on as a project,” said Martin. “We want people to know the church cares about their families. We just want to show them we love them.”

Martin said the church has been planning their first trunk-or-treat for about a month and a half.

“There was tons of initial planning,” said Martin. “We, as a church, are really excited. We have lots of candy to give away.”

Melvia Holt said she is excited for the event as well.

“It is going to be a fun-filled night with lots of things besides just getting candy from someone’s trunk,” said Holt.

Martin said the event will be safe, and parents should park across the street. Martin said once people are inside the parking lot where the event will be held, there will be no moving cars. Martin said she wanted to make sure children weren’t in harms’ way.
