Let’s Talk Educational Center is preparing to give back to the community during its second annual Friends and Family Day held Oct. 20. The event will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Hamlet Lions Club, located at the fairgrounds in Hamlet, and will recognize the assistance of community members and business leaders for support in the educational center.

The center’s mission involves working with clients, ages 18 and older, who need some form of psycho-social rehabilitation.

“We help the mentally disabled or anyone of that nature to obtain daily living skills and teach them how to be as independent as possible,” said Executive Assistant Melinda Miller. “(The center) is designed to help adults increase their function so they can be successful and satisfied in the environment of their choice. We have them gain coping skills to deal with different areas of life, such as depression, death or various mental disorders.”

The event encourages all friends, family and supportive community resources of the center to come out for a day of food, fun and fellowship.

The first 100 people will receive free food plates, Miller said, and plates will be sold for only $1 after that point.

There will also be cotton candy, popcorn, a bouncy-house and games in a family-friendly environment.

“Last year we had about 250 turn out,” said Owner Inda Dodson. “It was a good family crowd, and we enjoy doing it.”

Friends and Family Day invites providers, consumers, community support teams and local officials to join the event. For more information, contact 910-817-9192.
