RAEFORD — There is no truth to the rumor that Hoke County running back Detrez Newsome has a big “S” and a cape underneath his jersey.
Although no one can disprove it either right now.
Newsome racked up 296 yards and three touchdowns on 32 carries to lead the Bucks to a 21-0 victory over Westover Friday night. The senior running back has rushed for 1,369 yards and 21 scores to spark Hoke County to its first-ever 6-0 mark in school history.
The Bucks turned the ball over six times against the Wolverines, which did not sit well with coach Milton Butts.
“We were very, very luck to win,” Butts said to the Fayetteville Observer. “We stopped ourselves with the turnovers and that sort of thing. We hadn’t been doing it and it’s good that we could have that sort of game and still survive.”
Hoke County will travel to Raider Stadium 7:30 p.m. Friday to face No. 2 Richmond to open Southeastern Conference play. Last season, the Bucks won for the first time in 35 tries against the Raiders.
NEW HANOVER 42, PINECREST 24
SOUTHERN PINES — Pinecrest scored on its opening possession of the contest then watched as New Hanover scored 28 unanswered points to pull away for a 42-24 victory Friday night.
Pinecrest used a 44-yard punt return from Nick Lacy to score the contest’s initial touchdown. Lacy’s return moved the ball to the New Hanover 12. The drive was capped by a 4-yard run by Justin Sengkhenpong.
After being forced to punt the ball away on their first drive, the Wildcats (5-0) scored on their next three possessions and returned a fumble for a score to take a 28-7 lead into halftime.
“New Hanover is a heck of a football team, we know that by their body of work,” Pinecrest coach Chris Metzger said to The Pilot. “You know the sun is going to come up. We want to look at all the positives.”
The Patriots (3-3) will begin Southeastern Conference action 7:30 p.m. Friday when Lumberton comes to town. The Pirates are 4-1 on the season, with their only loss coming at Jack Britt.
