In honor of National Dance Week (Sept. 21-29), Sharon Nichols of American Dance Productions will offer a free introductory dance class today at 6:30 p.m. at Liberty Place in Rockingham.
According to studies, dancing can be a fun, alternative way to stay active and benefits both the body and mind.
Dancing has been shown to strengthen bones and muscles without hurting joints, tone the body, boost weight loss, improve posture and balance, increase stamina and flexibility, reduce stress and tension, help with management of diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, osteoporosis and depression, and build confidence.
“Dancing is great exercise,” said Nichols. “It falls into the category of ‘soft aerobics,’ meaning it’s not as hard on joints and muscles as many other forms of exercise. Even Dr. Oz regularly recommends dancing to his viewers as a great way to work out.”
“You can definitely revive a foggy brain,” said Dr. Mehmet Oz, in an interview with Orlando Magazine. “The best tool I find is dancing.”
Dancing also provides a means of social interaction.
According to Nichols, “People dance for a variety of reasons and occasions, such as weddings, beach vacations, charity galas, and club social events. And with the coming holiday season there will be many dance parties.
“This Open House will be the perfect opportunity to experiment with different dance styles, so there’s no reason to miss out on the fun because you’re worried you don’t know how to dance,” she said.
Liberty Place is located at 214 E. Washington St. in Rockingham.
