Dear Editor,

As the Director of the Humane Society of Richmond County, I would like to address several issues that have come about lately in the public eye and hopefully allay some of the confusion and concern that has arisen from them. We, at the shelter, are doing our utmost to save lives and to shelter animals in our care. We are the Humane Society and we operate under this premise. We believe animal owners are responsible for their animals and should not look to the shelter for an easy and convenient way out. Unfortunately, we have only a limited space and resources. The public is so quick to demand service. They wish to surrender animals at will without making donations. They allow their pets to breed and then surrender the litters to us. They will refuse to spay or neuter even when the service is offered at a low cost.

The shelter staff works hard daily to care for these hundreds of unwanted animals at a minimum wage pay without benefits. They work to the best of their abilities and try to save as many lives and find as many homes for these animals as possible. However, we are limited; limited by the animal welfare laws of NC, limited by space, funds, and homes to put them in. If the residents of Richmond County and the surrounding townships wish to help with any of these shortcomings we welcome their help and guidance. If you’re not supporting the shelter in some way, then please guard your criticism. If it’s not constructive, it’s not helpful.

For those in the community that have supported the shelter and staff at any time over the years, I give you my heartfelt thanks because I know who you are and I am grateful for all that you have done for us. Richmond County has a shelter that it should be proud to support, especially if you have seen what we evolved from over the years. If anyone would like to be a part of what we do at the shelter, please feel free to contact me and I would be more than happy to sit down and discuss with you what our needs are.

For the animals,

Valerie Davis

I have watched this animal shellter go down hill in the last past year. For years the shelter was a friedly place to visit. The staff was willing to work for the animals and not just the pay checks. You have people on your board that only care about the set they carry on that board. I have noticed over the last year the shelter has become nasty and smelly. At one time they had Two women there that gave their hearts to this place, without them our shelter will never be the same. This is our county shelter this is where out lost and unwanted animals go. The Humane Society needs to look back and look at all the mistakes they have made in the past and correct them.

Also, most owners tell me that your vouchers are only good at chop shops. None of the vets like Cooley or Gandy Animal Hospital will take them! Why not raise money for free spay and neuter. You'd get less crouding and need less donations for the shelter. Most people in this county have a difficult choice... Pay $200.00 to get your pet spayed or neutered or eat. Believe it or not most people want their pets fixed!!

$150.00 - Spay fee

$50.00 or more dollars to check to see if the animal has fleas or worms (even if you've been worming the pet since birth and the pet lives inside with regular baths) (this has to be done before the vet will spay or neuter) rip-off

$15.00 for rabies

etc. etc. etc...

That letter will not help you get any support, help... or donations. Why did you write it? You sound so angry...

There's no excuse for pet owners to not spay or neuter. This shelter offers vouchers for reduced-rate sterilization for Medicaid recipients. Even the poorest pet owners can afford to help control the animal population.

Did you ever get your air conditions up and running?because, I was told it's still hot at your facility.Yes, you are right, there are alot of not so responsible "animal owners" not pet owners letting their DOGS BREED AND BREED AND BREED with no thought for the animal at all.
