All-Star teams hit the diamond

ROCKINGHAM — One area team will continue its journey to reach the World Series, while two others will open tournament play this week.

The Rockingham Bronco All-Star team, which captured the Pony League’s Piedmont Section title Friday, will begin region action at 6 p.m. today against High Point Black at Charlotte’s Mallard Creek Community Park. The winner of that contest will play at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, while the loser will return to the diamond at 8 p.m. Wednesday. The other teams in the tournament are: Huntersville, Mallard Creek and Western Branch.

In the Pony Division, the Rockingham 13-year-old squad will open South Section play at 8 p.m. today versus North Mecklenburg at Charlotte’s Mallard Creek Community Park. The winner of the game will face the victor of the DC Force-Mooresville contest at 8 p.m. Wednesday. The losers of the two opening contests will battle at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The Rockingham 14-year-old team will travel to Asheboro for its Piedmont Section opener against Archdale at 8 p.m. today at Darrell Rich Field at Kiwanis Park. The victor will face off with the winner of the Asheboro-High Point White contest at 3 p.m. Wednesday, while the losers of the first-round games will hit the field immediately following the conclusion of the winner’s bracket game.

In the Pinto Division, the Rockingham team went 3-2 at the Super Region in High Point. The squad opened with a 20-0 victory over Stokedale in its opening game. It was dropped to the loser’s bracket following its 16-5 loss to Huntersville. The team stayed alive in the tournament with wins over CBC American and Oak Ridge, before being eliminated by Garner 13-3.

In softball action, the Rockingham 10U Dixie All-Stars captured its first two games in the state tournament this weekend in Eden. Rockingham defeated Dunn 4-0 behind the pitching of Jenna Greene, Savanna Barber and Greyson Way. The trio combined to no-hit Dunn. In its second game, the team rolled to a 10-0 win over Warren County. Jayanna Nicholson, Ragan Liles and Way each had two hits in the victory. Rockingham was scheduled to battle West Brunswick Monday in a matchup of two undefeated teams.
