Long-time area business owner William “Bo” Carroll Moss, 69, of Rockingham, died suddenly on Monday at UNC Hospital, Chapel Hill, and friends say he will be missed.

A native of Richmond County, he was the owner and operator of Moss Brothers Tires in Rockingham and a veteran of the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne.

According to Emily Tucker, director of the Chamber of Commerce, Moss will be missed by many in the community. Tucker said she recalled the last thing he said to her at a Business Before Hours function where he expressed his dislike for evening functions.

“I turn into a pumpkin at 5 o’clock,” he said to Tucker, who laughed upon recalling it. “We almost never got Bo out,” she said.

Tucker said Moss was a member of the Chamber since 1989.

“He not only ran a good business but was a good friend, too,” said Tim Hawks, owner of Richmond Block and Brick in Rockingham. “He went above and beyond to accommodate his customers. He was just a good man. He was more than just a good friend. He is going to be missed by a lot of people.”

Ronnie Hawks owns Hawks Builders in Rockingham and was business neighbors and friends with Moss for many years.

“I’ve known him all my life,” said Hawks. “He was a great guy. We did business together for the last 30 years. I put up his building. He wanted to be sure customers were getting their money’s worth and that they were safe after the work he had done. He was very conscientious about how he did his work. We will really miss him. He was a great guy. A lot of people will be affected by his passing.”

“Bo” loved spending time with his grandchildren, making people laugh, and working in his flowers, his family said.

Memorials may be made in “Bo’s” memory to Richmond County Humane Society, 529 W. US Hwy. 74, Rockingham, NC 28379.

Harrington Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the Moss family. A complete obituary appears on page 5.
