Join the folks at Triple L Farms for an annual “pollination celebration” this Saturday, held at The Derby Store in Ellerbe.
Take a trip back in time, and check out displays of vintage farm equipment and household items.
“A lot of people get a kick out of just walking through the old country store,” said Marcia Lambeth, owner. “We have a lot of very old, original items and it’s almost like a museum collection.”
Frosty sodas in glass bottles and fresh produce straight from the fields will be in abundance. Kick off your shoes and enjoy live music and hand-dipped ice cream, hot dogs and old-fashioned candies.
Local crafting and demonstrations will take place throughout the day. A horseshoe pit, bounce house and hop scotch games will keep the kids entertained while you shop for homemade jams. The Scottish Twirlers are scheduled for a dance performance at 11 a.m., Earl Key will be selling unique bluebird houses and handing out information on the birds, and Charlie Rabb will have pine cone crafts available.
The Richmond County Beekeepers Association will be on hand to talk about how flying bugs contribute to pollination.
“During the month of June, we focus on pollination and food growing,” said Lambeth. “It’s a very educational day. The kids love it because the beekeepers will bring an observation beehive and they’ll be bringing the new mobile honey extraction unit.”
Paige Burns, the assistant horticulture agent and interim county extension director for the Richmond County Cooperative Extension, will also be at the event talking about vermicomposting.
“I don’t know why it’s called that,” said Burns. “It just means composting with worms. I’ll be there to show people how to make a very basic compost bin. Laura Grier, the new 4H agent, will also be there with information for kids and families about all the summer programs and clubs being offered.”

Pretty as a Peach Day on July 7. The public is invited to stop by the produce stand for peaches and ice cream.
Lazy Hazy Crazy Day will be held August 4. As the produce stand winds down the summer, the public is invited to stop by for fresh watermelon slices.
“Part of the reason we started doing these ‘Derby Days’ during the summer was because there are a lot people from Hamlet and Rockingham who have never even been to this part of the county,” said Lambeth. “It’s a beautiful little drive, and quite a nice area.”
The Junebug event lasts from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., and The Derby Store is located at 2205 Derby Road, in Ellerbe.
