The Rockingham Police Department is currently investigating the death of a toddler found in Rockingham on Wednesday afternoon.
As a routine practice, the State Bureau of Investigation was called in to help investigate the death. At this point in time, police say there appears to be no foul play. Authorities have sent the body to Chapel Hill and are currently awaiting autopsy results.
The child was discovered around 1:30 p.m. at a local motel along with the child’s father, who officers recognized as having an outstanding warrant on a felony charge of assault by strangulation. The man was taken into custody on the outstanding warrant.
Police Chief Billy Kelly said the child’s death is not related to the earlier alleged assault.
