Dear Editor,

As my childhood came and went, I grew up in Rockingham.

At the age of 16, I was privileged and excited to have the opportunity to attend the first NASCAR event at The Rockingham Speedway in October of 1965, which Curtis Turner won driving a Ford.

I entered the U.S. Army in 1966 and traveled parts of the world. I was pleased when I returned to this area in 2009 and made Aberdeen my home after retiring.

I, again on Sunday, April 15, 2012, was excited to have the opportunity to attend the first NASCAR truck series race at the Rockingham Speedway “The Rock.” What a great flashback and memories.

Thank you Rockingham and NASCAR for returning to “The Rock.” I look forward to many races to come.

Donald R. Thompson

Aberdeen
