ROCKINGHAM — As a pitcher, Casey Snead usually leaves the opposition quaking in the batter’s box.
Next year, Snead will be known as a quaker on the diamond — a Guilford Quaker.
The senior right-hander signed a letter of intent to attend the Greensboro school earlier this week before Richmond Senior took on Pinecrest.
“It’s close to home,” Snead said about selecting Guilford. “I like that it’s close because I’ve grown up in a small town (Ellerbe). I can come home on the weekends and my family can roll up to Guilford in about an hour and watch me.”
Snead helped Richmond to a 15-7 overall mark and a second-place finish in the Southeastern Conference with an 8-2 record this year. Snead has an 11-6 record and a save with a 1.08 ERA. She has 150 strikeouts in 110 1/3 innings.
The Raiders received a bye in the opening round of the SEC tournament and will face either Scotland or Hoke County in the semifinals Tuesday night.
Another one of Guilford’s selling points was the enrollment. With a little more than 2,700 students, Snead is happy to be one of the big fish in a small pond.
“Education is first and softball is the icing on the cake,” Snead said. “I also like being a name at Guilford instead of a number or just a face at a bigger school.”
The Quakers finished their season with a 17-23 record and were 4-14 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Guilford will lose four seniors, two of whom were pitchers, off this year’s roster.
Snead said she had an opportunity to meet some of her future teammates, including her roommate, at an orientation.
“The other girls who are attending Guilford next year as freshman to play softball are really nice,” Snead said. “When I got in line, I was behind my future roommate, but I didn’t know it at the time. Guilford’s coach (Dennis Shores) saw me and introduced us and said ‘This will probably be your catcher next year.’ We happened to be in the same group at orientation and we decided to be roommates.”
