Win, place or show — celebrate the 138th Kentucky Derby at the Fair Barn in the Village of Pinehurst amidst amazing wines, great food and unbeatable company, all on behalf of some very special children. The ‘Run for the Roses’ Wine & Beer Tasting benefiting the children of Sandhills Children’s Center is surely the most “tasteful” event of the Spring, say organizers. The thirteenth annual wine tasting, presented in partnership with Kober Investment Group of Wells Fargo Advisors, will be held on Friday, May 4, from 6 to 9 pm.

The Kentucky Derby themed event is made possible by the donation of wines from Mutual Distributing. As in years past, Peter Zahran and a cast of his top representatives will be on hand to sample over 100 wines from various Californian and European wineries for the wine connoisseurs and the “wine curious” alike. Perfect pairings of hors d’oeuvres are prepared and offered by some of the most celebrated chefs from their restaurants in the Sandhills: Ashten’s, Chef Warren’s, Elliott’s on Linden, Mid Pines Resort, and many others. As you stroll from table to table, listen for the sounds of The Court Stewart Jazz Group and let your senses be enchanted by the atmosphere of the perfect derby party. Returning this year on the back patio is the Beer Garden, donated and hosted by The Sly Fox. Featured brews are carefully selected craft beers from two North Carolina breweries.

“Upon entering the Fair Barn, you will be swept away by the glorious architecture of the historical building and the elegant décor in true Derby fashion provided by the generous donation of dozens of red roses by The Fresh Market. The transformation of the Barn is a result of the hard work of a very dedicated committee of volunteers,” said Kathy Desmond, director of development. “There’s a huge team of dedicated people who volunteer their time each year to ensure that the Run for the Roses both survives and thrives.”

The entire evening and all its tempting treats is $55 per person for general admission or $75 for premium admission. Sponsorship opportunities range from the $300 level of a Belmont Stakes Sponsor to the $2,500 level of a Triple Crown Sponsor. All Run for the Roses sponsors receive reserved seating and includes premium admission tickets to the Jockey Club tasting tent.

Over the past 13 years, the Run for the Roses Wine Tasting has blossomed into one of North Carolina’s most celebrated wine and food events, say organizers.

All proceeds from the wine tasting will benefit Sandhills Children’s Center, a private, non-profit developmental day school organization whose mission is to provide services of the highest quality for children with and without special developmental needs, ages birth through five. The geographic range is far reaching in a four county area in south central North Carolina with two campuses located in Rockingham and Southern Pines. The Children’s Center provides specialized services to over 350 children each year, some children with chronic illnesses, such as Down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy and other developmental delays.

“Currently, the cost of care per child with disabilities in our program exceeds $60,000 per year. Private donations are essential in the continuity of care for our young students and enables Sandhills Children’s Center to provide physical, occupational and speech therapy, class instruction by state certified teachers, transportation, meals and so much more,” said Melanie Gayle, Chief Executive Officer.

“Don’t miss out on the most “tasteful” event of the spring. Tickets are limited and they are going fast,” said Teresa Copper, Special Event Coordinator. For more information about the Run for the Roses, contact Teresa Copper at 910-692-3323 or visit www.sandhillschildrenscenter.org.
