The Hamlet City Council voted unanimously to ban use of all tobacco products in city parks and facilities Tuesday night. This does not include parking lot areas.

If a “reminder” about the policy from park personnel is ineffective, the local law enforcement officials will follow up on the complaint, according to city officials.

Also at the meeting:

Council voted to change the name of a portion of Lackey Street to T.R. Legrand Street. No homes face this portion of the street and no addresses will be affected.

City offices will be closed Nov. 11, in observance of Veteran’s Day.

City offices will be closed Nov. 24 and 25, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Garbage will be picked up on Wednesday, Nov. 23.

The City of Hamlet Community Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held Nov. 28, at 5:30 p.m., at the Hamlet Depot Park on Main Street.

The City of Hamlet Christmas Parade will be Dec. 8, at 3:30 p.m., sponsored by the Hamlet Rotary.

The City of Hamlet “Old Fashioned Christmas” will be held Dec. 9 and 10, and will feature free horse and buggy rides.

This is a prime example of another invasion into your personal life, created by a bunch of part time do-gooders, smoking is not illegal. cigarettes are a legally sold item and most smokers try no to offend non-smokers, then you have a bunch of self-righteous duly elected ego merchants who decide that smoking may offend some small section of our population and they, in predictable fashion go to work minding or personal lives, well I tell you one thing, I smoke and I like it and I accept that it is bad for your health and I also visit nursing homes and see all those non-smokers who are in their 80`s and 90`s with their tongues hanging out and slobbering and using bed pans and I realize that they would be better off if they had smoked, so my message to you samaritans is to tend to your own affairs and quit looking for some cause to join.

Have a smoke on me, dummies.
