The Cole Foundation has announced the appointment of Dr. Al Covington of Rockingham to its board of trustees.
A graduate of Elon College and Southern College of Optometry, Dr. Covington is the founder of Covington Optometric Eye Clinic in Rockingham. He has served on the boards of a number of professional and educational organizations, including Richmond Community College, the Richmond Community College Foundation, and the advisory board of Four Oaks Bank. Covington has been a member of the Rockingham Rotary Club for 33 years and is a past president of the organization, as well as a former Distinguished Rotarian of the Year and Paul Harris Fellow. He is also an active member of Glenwood United Methodist Church.
Other Cole Foundation board members include Russell E. Bennett, Jr., J. Neal Cadieu, Jr., Charles B. Deane, Jr., Lazelle Marks and Sandra B. Ridley.
Established in 1968, the Cole Foundation is a permanent endowment fund of Foundation For The Carolinas that serves a broad range of charitable, educational, religious, literary and cultural purposes. Since moving to the Foundation For The Carolinas in 1989, the Cole Foundation has distributed more than $24 million in grants to nonprofit organizations throughout Richmond County and beyond—including more than $3 million for the recently announced Discovery Place Kids Rockingham project.
