Rumors ran wild Wednesday morning after a nearly two-year-old child passed away.

Multiple anonymous calls to the Daily Journal said the child had been a victim of sodomy, and had complained of her bottom aching, and was suffering from rectal bleeding. Hamlet Police Chief John Haywood said none of this was true.

According to Haywood, the child was with her family Tuesday night. They had company over, and all the children were playing when the adults noticed the toddler in question was having difficulty breathing. At 10:35 p.m. Hamlet Rescue was notified of an unconscious child, and rushed her to the Richmond Memorial Hospital. The child did not survive.

“We escorted the child to Charlotte for an autopsy,” said Haywood. “That usually takes about a week or two, but there was no sexual assault or blunt force trauma.”

Investigation is still underway. No names have been released.
