The Richmond Senior men’s tennis team improved to a perfect 3-0 in Southeastern Conference play in 2011 Monday afternoon with a convincing 8- 1 win over visiting Hoke County.

Richmond coach Paula York said Monday night’s result was a nice carryover from the Raiders’ last match, a 7-2 victory over Lumberton on the road last Thursday.

“We’ve got some tough matches this week against Pinecrest and Scotland, so I hope the carryover continues for us,” York said.

Women’s soccer

Richmond 10, Purnell Swett 0

PEMBROKE - The Richmond Senior women’s soccer team notched its first Southeastern Conference victory of 2011 Monday night on the road, shutting out Purnell Swett, 10-0 in a game stopped at halftime due to the 10-goal rule.

Richmond scored early and often in this one, getting a pair of goals each from Brittany Hudson, Anna Werneth and Celeste Salgado, and single goals from Kira Renczewitz, Kendra York, Lashonda York and Kim Smith.

The Lady Raiders (4-4 overall, 1-2 SEC) outshot the Lady Rams, 33-1.

Brittany Roberts, Tete Brewington and Caitlin Chappell collaborated on the shutout for Richmond.

Lady Raider coach Bennie Howard said despite the lopsided score and shortened game, he was able to get all his players some game action.

“That will only help us as the season goes on,” Howard said.

Richmond continues Southeastern Conference play Wednesday night on the road at Lumberton. The J.V. contest kicks off at 5:30 p.m., with the varsity slated to follow at about 7 p.m.

Men’s golf

Raiders third at Hoke

RAEFORD - The Richmond Senior men’s golf team showed improvement over last week’s scores, and the result on Monday was a third-place finish in a Southeastern Conference meet hosted by the Bucks.

Pinecrest won the meet with a team score of 296. Purnell Swett was second with a 322, followed by Richmond with a 325. Scotland was fourth with a 328. Lumberton and Hoke were fifth and sixth respectively; team scores were not available for the Pirates or Bucks.

Richmond was led by Davis Hilton, who fired a 74. John Dunlap carded a 77, and Curt Kindley, Chris McDonnell and Cary Brooks each carded 87s. Zach Shilen added an 88, and Tyler Kirk shot a 90.

Each of the Raiders showed a 7-10-stroke improvement over last week, according to Richmond coach John Entwistle.

“That’s exactly what we want to see,” Entwistle said. “We want to get better every week.”

The Raiders travel to Scotch Meadows in Laurinburg next week.
