ROCKINGHAM — Walmart shoppers got more than they bargained for Saturday when a brawl broke out just outside the grocery-side doors, leaving one man bloodied and an elderly woman injured during the frenzy.

Gary Quick Jr., 43, of Rockingham, said he was minding his own business when he was assaulted while leaving the building.

“I was just coming shopping out for me and my mom,” he said, standing shirtless and bloodied outside the store. “Next thing I know I was being whaled from the side of that purple car, to this over here. And this lady right here got knocked down somehow ‘nother.”

That lady was 65-year-old Carol Johnson of Hamlet. She sat still on the concrete as paramedics worked to keep her spine straight, her right eye already beginning to blacken and swell.

“I was pushing at this end, and they were fighting and ran into my buggy,” she said. “And I ended up like this.”

Virginia Gainey, 63, of Rockingham, stood beside Quick and described what she saw as the fight escalated.

“I got hit and I had open-heart surgery,” she said.

The Rockingham Police Department, Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and FirstHealth EMS responded to the scene.

A police report lists Quick, Johnson, 29-year-old Candi Renee Croom and 35-year-old Reginald Jacobs as victims — as well as Quick, Croom, Gainey and Jacobs as suspects.

According to the Richmond County Magistrates’ Office, Gainey “issued process” against Candi Croom for assault and communicating threats.

Quick also filed complaints against Candi Croom and Reggie Croom for assault and battery.

“Based on facts and circumstances, a warrant for arrest was necessary to what they had sworn to,” Magistrate Holly Smith said Monday afternoon.

Smith said those warrants have been issued.

CAUTHEN DRIVE SHOOTING

Smith confirmed a warrant has also been issued for the arrest 27-year-old Tyrone Lamont Covington.

Covington is suspected in the Saturday shooting of 27-year-old Adrian Lamar Campbell in the parking lot of 1213 Cauthen Drive.

He will be facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and discharging a firearm in city limits when arrested, Smith said.

According to a police report, the victim was already at the hospital and the suspect had left the scene by the time the responding officer — who “could not get any information from anyone at the scene” — arrived.
