ROCKINGHAM — A convicted felon is facing multiple misdemeanor assault and child abuse charges after allegedly throwing bricks at children.

According to arrest warrants, 29-year-old Charles Thomas Bloomfield, of Stokes Road south of Rockingham, threw bricks into and at a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer on Sept. 18. The vehicle was occupied by a woman and three children younger than 12 — ages 1, 4 and 7.

Bloomfield is also accused of hitting the woman in the head and body with his fists and hitting the 4-year-old in the head for crying, causing a cut and a bruise.

Damage to the vehicle is estimated in excess of $200.

He was arrested later that night by a deputy with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and charged with four counts of misdemeanor child abuse, three misdemeanor counts of assault on a child under 12 and one misdemeanor count each of assault on a female and causing injury to personal property.

He was initially booked into the Richmond County Jail under 48-hour domestic violence hold before receiving a total secured bond of $35,000.

Online court records show Bloomfield has no other pending charges. He is scheduled to appear in court on the assault and child abuse charges Monday.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.

Bloomfield was first convicted on a felony charge of possession with intent to sell marijuana in 2009, according to records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction.

Initially he was given probation, but it was revoked and Bloomfield was incarcerated from Jan. 4 to May 5, 2011.

In July 2012, he was given probation after being convicted on a misdemeanor charge of simple assault or affray, stemming from an incident two months prior.
