Sports Briefs: Richmond Jammers to host “Battle of the Borders” on Saturday


Jammers to host first tournament Saturday

ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Jammers travel basketball club will host the “Battle of the Boarders” basketball tournament, its first of the year, Saturday at Falling Creek gym.

Teams will traveling in from Southern Pines, Fayetteville, Sanford and Raleigh to compete for the tournament championship. Two other local travel basketball clubs, the Richmond Heat and Richmond Prep, will also be competing in the tournament.

“Please come out and support all local talent as we look to bring more tournaments to Richmond County,” coach Taneika Reader said.

Games will begin at 8 a.m. and be played throughout the day until around 10 p.m. Admission is $10 and will cover all scheduled games.

Church softball to hold 1st meeting next week

ROCKINGHAM — The men’s church softball league will hold its first organizational meeting Monday, Apr. 3 at Freedom Baptist Church at 7 p.m.

Any church wishing to field a team this year should have a representative at the meeting, as the league will begin play as soon at East Rockingham park. Schedules will be passed out at the second meeting and games will be played on Monday and Thursday nights.

Youth baseball, softball accepting registration

ROCKINGHAM — The City of Rockingham Parks and Recreation began accepting registration for its youth baseball and softball leagues earlier this week and will conclude signups Thursday, Apr. 6.

The registration fee, which includes insurance for all players, is $45 for city residents and $55 for non-city residents. All current and new players must register by the deadline.

Those interested, boys and girls, must turn 4 years of age on or before Sunday, Apr. 30. Boys cannot reach their 13th birthday on or before Apr. 30, while girls couldn’t have turned 16 on or before Jan. 1.

Registration is limited and restricted to participants living in the city limits of Rockingham and the greater Rockingham area. All new players must bring copy of their birth certificates at the time of registration.
