LAURINBURG — The Ellerbe Middle School boys cross country team defended its title as the Southeastern Middle School Athletic Conference champions after completing an undefeated season Thursday.

Ellerbe (5-0) held off Carver Middle School 28-31 in the 2.1-mile season finale at Spring Hill Middle School.

Leading the Wildcats was eighth-grader Tyler King, who placed fourth overall. Solidifying the title were River Meacham (6), Brycen Goodwin (8), Johan Chavez (10), Cale Luckey (11) and Cody Troxler (27). King, Meacham, Chavez and Luckey were all members of last season’s championship team.

Earning their second title in as many seasons makes this group of young men the winningest team in Ellerbe athletics history.

“Run for each other, that was our team motto this year,” coach Kyle Pillar said. “And that’s what these fellas did. They ran for the guy in front of and behind them, and were rewarded. I’m so proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish at Ellerbe.”
