MT. GILEAD — When the Richmond Senior volleyball team met West Montgomery two weeks ago in Raider Gymnasium, the Lady Raiders made easy work of the Lady Warriors in three sets.

Things weren’t so easy this time around.

Altman Griffin matched the number of kills (16) she had in the first meeting, and Layne Maultsby recorded 11 digs, but that wasn’t enough — as West Montgomery got its revenge in a 3-0 victory (25-22, 25-18, 25-10) over Richmond.

The Lady Raiders (4-3-3) look to get back on track when they host Hoke County at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 8.

BOTH XC TEAMS FINISH 2ND

LUMBERTON — The Richmond Senior boys and girls cross country teams both finished second overall in their first conference meet which was held at Luther Britt Park.

Pinecrest and Lumberton came in first and third, respectively, in both boys and girls competitions.

Cameron Hudson finished sixth, Summer Moore seventh and Harmony Jones tenth to lead the way for the Lady Raiders. Zachariah Hamilton — who has finished first for the Raiders in all three competitons — placed second, while Jaylynn Sturdivant came in 11th place.

The boys and girls cross country teams will host Scotland and Purnell Swett next Tuesday, Sept. 13 at Hinson Lake.

TENNIS DEFEATS PURNELL SWETT

MAXTON — Tuesday afternoon’s No. 3 doubles match between the Richmond Senior and Purnell Swett girls tennis teams was chalked up as a DNP (did not play).

But that didn’t affect the outcome.

The Lady Raiders dominated the Lady Rams 7-1, posting wins in every match but the No. 1 singles.

After falling to Purnell Swett’s Brook Huggins (6-1) in the first game, Kenzie Ransom grabbed a 6-3 win to force a third game between the two opponents. Ransom would put up a fight, but Huggins eventually got the 10-7 win — grabbing the only victory for the Lady Rams on the day.

Richmond’s Kallie Hammond swept Purnell Swett’s Malina Cummings (6-0, 6-0) in the No. 4 singles, while Ransom and Destiny Buie cruised to a 8-1 win in the No. 1 doubles.

Next up, the girls tennis team will take on Marlboro Academy at home Wednesday, Sept. 7.
