ROCKINGHAM — Stony Point’s Joe Julsrud and Troutman’s Ernie Humes — current point leaders in Top Eliminator and Footbrake, respectively — try to hold off multiple challengers this week when the 2016 Hoosier Tires Carolina Coalition Bracket Series races to a conclusion at Rockingham Dragway.

Entering the last two of six races, on Saturday and Sunday, Julsrud has a six-point cushion over both Cameron Manuel of Winston-Salem and Skip Briggs of Lexington. Raleigh’s Gary Ingold, Lexington’s Jordan Wike and Winston-Salem’s Tommy Plott are all a point further back.

Ingold has finished no worse than third in Coalition points each of the last three seasons and Plott was the very first series champion back in 2003 — he and Ingold tied for second a year ago.

Humes was the Coalition Footbrake champ in 2012 and, like Julsrud, will start the race with a comfortable four-point lead over Hudson’s Kelly Steven, with Jeff Flood of Mocksville and David Spaugh of Advance another two points behind. Stevens, who has two entries among the top five in points, shared last year’s Footbrake title with Dunn’s Justin West.

In addition to championship points, there’ll be a $5,000 winner’s purse up for grabs each day in Top Eliminator with $1,000 to win in Footbrake. As always, big trailer checks will be awarded to the winners along with championship jackets.

Meanwhile, Jason McCandless — grandson of Mr. Four Speed, Pro Stock legend Herb McCandless of Burlington — is among three drivers tied for the points lead in the Jr. Dragster class.

McCandless shares the lead with Isaac Bridges of Shelby and Dylan Branscome of Hillsville, Virginia. Each finished the first four races with 26 points. Saylar and Skylar Bustle of Sherrills Ford and Ethan Bickford of Concord are also still in contention — each with 22 points.

An adult combo ticket for both days of racing is $25. Daily tickets at the gate are $15. Children 12 and under are free when accompanied by a ticketed adult.
