Maranatha edges Temple Christian

ROCKINGHAM — Temple Christian Academy’s varsity boys missed two shots in the closing seconds, dropping a 57-56 heartbreaker to Maranatha Christian School on Thursday.

Xavier Pettigrew paced the Temple Tigers with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Senior Russ Byrd, playing with a broken thumb, contributed eight points, five rebounds and seven assists for the Tigers.

Temple fell to 9-7, 6-2 following the non-conference loss to Florence, South Carolina-based Maranatha.

Led by Mary Smith’s 23 points and eight rebounds, Temple’s varsity girls handed Maranatha a 41-31 loss, improving to 17-2 and 8-1 in the conference.

Senior Claire Jordan tallied eight points and 11 rebounds and senior Elizabeth McQueen chipped in two points and 10 rebounds in their last home game at Temple.

The JV girls defeated Maranatha 39-25, paced by Smith’s 15 points and 10 rebounds. The team improves to 8-3, 4-2 with the win.

Temple’s JV boys fell to Maranatha 54-39 and dropped to 5-7, 3-4. Daniel Sisk led the team with 18 points and Pettigrew added 11 points and eight rebounds.

The varsity boys and girls were scheduled to play conference foe Mintz Christian Academy on the road in Roseboro Friday night.

Tigers tame Liberty Christian

ROCKINGHAM — Temple Christian’s varsity girls locked up first place in the conference with a 56-49 win over Liberty Christian Academy on Tuesday.

Senior Claire Jordan returned after being sidelined for three weeks with a high ankle sprain to lead the Lady Tigers with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

The girls’ record improved to 16-2, 8-1 on the home win against Liberty Christian out of Fayetteville.

Playing for first place in the conference, Temple’s JV girls fell to Liberty 36-32 and were tied for the conference lead and regular-season title with a 7-3, 6-2 record. Mary Smith paced the team with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

The Tigers’ varsity boys team was tied for first in the conference following a 66-52 loss to Liberty. Daniel Sisk paced the boys with 16 points and Isaiah Scott chipped in 14 points. The Tigers’ record stood at 9-6, 6-2.

Liberty took down Temple’s JV boys 45-43, dropping the Tigers to third place in the conference with a 5-6, 3-4 record. Xavier Pettigrew led the team in scoring with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Soccer sign-ups continue

ROCKINGHAM — The city of Rockingham’s parks and recreation department began registering children and teens for the spring soccer program on Wednesday. Sign-ups continue through Feb. 18.

Participants must be 4 years old by Aug. 1 and cannot turn 17 on or before Aug. 1.

Registration is limited to participants living in the Rockingham city limits and the greater Rockingham area as defined as within the ZIP codes 28379 and 28380. All other participants wishing to play but living outside of the Rockingham area will be placed on a waiting list for available slots.

Participation fees are $25 for city residents and $35 for those who live outside the city limits but within the 28379 and 28380 ZIP code zones.
