Soccer sign-ups continue

ROCKINGHAM — The city of Rockingham’s parks and recreation department began registering children and teens for the spring soccer program on Wednesday. Sign-ups continue through Feb. 18.

Participants must be 4 years old by Aug. 1 and cannot turn 17 on or before Aug. 1.

Registration is limited to participants living in the Rockingham city limits and the greater Rockingham area as defined as within the ZIP codes 28379 and 28380.

Participation fees are $25 for city residents and $35 for those who live outside the city limits but within the 28379 and 28380 ZIP code zones.

City limits sports enrollment

ROCKINGHAM — Effective with registration for spring 2016 sports, the city of Rockingham’s parks and recreation department will have limited open enrollment.

City staff will accept applicants who live inside the Rockingham city limits and within the immediate area with the 28379, 28380 and 28330 ZIP codes. Applicants who live outside the primary registration area may request to be put on a waiting list for available slots.

Due to unlimited countywide enrollment, Rockingham Parks and Recreation has experienced “tremendous growth,” leading to overcrowding at city facilities, parking lots and practice fields, according to a city of Rockingham news release.

Non-city residents comprised roughly 62 percent of total participants in Rockingham recreation programs, the release said, leading to “heavy subsidization of non-city participants” by Rockingham taxpayers “to cover (the) full cost of providing recreation programs.”

Effective with this change in enrollment, the city of Rockingham will continue to evaluate results from a financial and facility basis and determine any future changes that may be required.
