ROCKINGHAM — It was a repeat performance for the Richmond Senior girls tennis team.

In the first meeting, Richmond downed Hoke 6-3 in Raeford. In the rematch, the Raiders pulled out another 6-3 victory over the Bucks Wednesday afternoon.

“We are working really hard to get into third,” Richmond coach Allie Goodman said.

Richmond improves to 3-4 overall and 3-3 in the Southeastern Conference with the win. Scotland and Richmond are battling for third in the standings. The Scots currently hold the tiebreaker because of their 5-4 win over the Raiders on Sept. 17.

Against the Bucks, the Raiders won five of the six singles contests to clinch the win. The Bucks rallied to win two doubles matches.

The teams agreed to play an eight-game pro set in the singles matches because of the threat of rain.

Richmond’s Kathrin Reister knocked off Taylor Jacobs 8-3 in the top singles match. Kenzie Ransom edged Alexis Osorio 10-8 at No. 2. Destiny Buie topped Hannah Locklear 8-3. Jayana Nicholson cruised past Alexa Burnett 8-1. Kallie Hammond took down Monica Maynor 8-1.

“Kenzie had a really nice comeback win,” Goodman said. “It was nice revenge from the last time.”

In the first meeting, Osorio downed Ransom 6-0, 6-3.

Kamaria Harris claimed the lone singles win for Hoke at No. 5, beating Majasti Robinson 8-1.

In the doubles matches, Jacobs and Osorio downed Ransom and Reister 8-4 at No. 1. Jamie Moore and Savannah Wade blanked Faith Baxley and Emily Duckworth 8-0 in the final doubles match.

Buie and Nicholson rolled past Burnett and Locklear 8-1.

Goodman hopes to be able to continue the Purnell Swett match next week. She added today’s match with Lumberton could be postponed as well because of the threat of rain. If that is the case, Goodman said one of the contests would have to be played the Monday before the conference tournament.

The Raiders and the Pirates are scheduled to begin their match at 4 p.m. today in Lumberton.

Soccer showdown postponed

LAURINBURG — Officials postponed Wednesday night’s Richmond-Scotland soccer match because a bank of lights were unable to turn on.

The game is now scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday at Scotland.

The junior varsity contest was played and Richmond cruised to a 9-0 win. The game was called with more than 20 minutes remaining in the second half because of the mercy rule.

Austin Cowick netted two goals in the win. Nolan Allen, Isaiah Davenport, C.J. Helms, Evan Hudson, Joe Huff, Juan Mercado and Jonathan Tadlock all scored one goal for the Raiders.
