Men’s group to hold BBQ on Saturday
The Millstone Men of the Church will hold their annual barbecue Saturday, April 20, at the Millstone Community Building off Gibson Nursery Road in Ellerbe. Hamlet man shot dead in field
Scott Witten A man who authorities say is in the county illegally has been arrested in the shooting death of a Hamlet man. Uribe Morales Avalos, of Mexico, is accused of killing 26-year-old David Delon Hernadez, police said. Avalos is also charged with shooting Miquel Valencia Sanches of Laurinburg. A bill that would require applicants and recipients of the Work First Benefit program to take a drug test was moved to the Health Care Committee in the State Senate last week. Senate Bill 594, titled Require Drug Testing/Work First Benefits, was filed on April 2 by Senator Jim Davis, for North Carolina’s 50th District. The show covered music from Motown greats, such as The Temptations, The Supremes and Smokey Robinson. The show was part of the DeWitt Performing Arts Series at Richmond Community College. The next show of the series will be Sandi Patty on Thursday, May 2, and a limited number of tickets remain. Curtis Ingram of Hamlet has been named Mason of the Year by Poplar Hill Lodge 331 for his leadership in the community. Formerly of Rockingham, Ingram grew up in the Philadelphia community. He is 45, and is retired from the NC Department of Correction. On Friday, Ingram also received a plaque for outstanding service to the community. The City of Hamlet got a new look on Saturday thanks to CSX and City Year. About 90 volunteers helped build picnic tables, benches and garden boxes for the city.
