The men of Sandhill Boys BBQ Cooking Team smoked about 1,200 pounds of chicken and pork on Tuesday for the annual fundraiser to help the Rockingham Rescue Squad. The East Rockingham Fire Department let the Sandhill Boys use their facilities to cook the food. BBQ plates will be sold for $7 and there will be a choice between pork and chicken. The plates will include BBQ, baked beans, cole slaw, bread and a dessert. The proceeds will go towards maintaining the Rescue Squad’s building, equipment and also helping the squad go to emergency calls. The plates will be sold at the Rockingham Rescue Squad building on 1004 Rockingham Road on Friday, May 3, from 11 a.m. until the BBQ runs out.

Metal fabricator Mac Metz of Wet Glass Studio grinds metal during the steel fabrication stage of production. Wet Glass Studio is section of STARWorks. STARWorks is a former sock mill in Star, NC, that covers 187,000 square feet. At one time, it employed at least 800 people and was owned by a local family. But six years ago or so, the mill closed and moved everything to Mexico. The move had a huge impact on the town. About four years ago, the Yadkin/Pee Dee Project moved in. They renamed it Central Park NC and started using the huge sock mill as a place for entrepreneurs to create small businesses that would help sustain the local economy and give back to the community.

Senior Tyrone Crowder, a football player for the Richmond Raiders, spoke with a room full of students at Big Pine Retreat in Hamlet on Friday, April 26. Crowder talked about his path to success, as well as the importance of maintaining good grades, good behavior and knowing how to face challenges in a positive way. “For me, there are people in the stands — teachers, families, my coaches — and I’ve got to be a good example for them,” Crowder said. The offensive lineman also talked to students about surrounding themselves with the right kinds of people and controlling their tempers in difficult situations. Crowder announced earlier in the year that he plans to play football at Clemson University this fall. At Richmond Senior High, he is an honor roll student and a member of the school senate.
