The Richmond County Branch of the NAACP will have its 35th annual Mother of the Year Banquet at 7:30 p.m. Friday, at the East Hamlet Concerned Citizens Center, 155 Laurel Hill St., in Hamlet. The featured speaker for this event will be the Rev. Darryl C. Carter. Carter is a native of Gulfport, Miss., and is married to Gwendolyn Carter. They reside in Fayetteville. Together, they have three children and five grandchildren.
He attended Jackson State University and is a United States Army veteran of 12 years. Rev. Carter had his start in the ministry more than 25 years ago. He is employed and enjoys working as a Systems/Network Administrator.
He is a founding member of the former DLA, Inc. of Cumberland County that served as a youth outreach vehicle and a small business incubator for Youth and Young Adults. He has volunteered as a mentor for the Hoke County High School Senior Project Program.
He also served as former 3rd Vice Moderator of the St. John Missionary Baptist Educational Association.
For the past six years, he has served as pastor of the Ellerbe Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Since pastoring in Richmond County, he has become an avid supporter and advocate of the Hamlet Ministerial Association and the Richmond County Branch of the NAACP.
Cost of tickets for the banquet are $20, and can be purchased at the door.
