The National Day of Prayer will be held May 2 on the Richmond County Courthouse steps in Rockingham, and will celebrate its 20th year.
The National Day of Prayer Committee Chairperson Cathy Wilson said she and Sherrill Jackson began the Day of Prayer in Richmond County in 1993, and feel blessed to have been able to continue the event for so long. Last year the committee installed a billboard on Highway U.S. 1 that calls on people to be proud of their ability to pray.
“It’s just grown through the years,” said Wilson. “Now we have 25-30 committee members and not all of them are pastors; in fact, most of them are laypeople.”
The event will begin at noon on the courthouse steps and will last about 50 minutes.
The Cordova School will lead the Pledge of Allegiance and sing, and Richmond County Sheriff James E. Clemmons Jr. is scheduled to speak.
Baseball coach Ricky Young will give his testimony and he will have baseball player Drew Butler with him. Sheryl Bailey will read scripture, and Hannah Leviner and Logan McKenzie will sing songs. Pastors Robbie Stewart and Ernie Walters will say prayers as well. Jerry Turner will give his testimony.
“It’s amazing that we’ve been able to do this for 20 years,” said Wilson. “We encourage everyone to come out and support it.”
The committee will hand out bookmarks and $10 T-shirts will be available.
