Seventh grade students at Ellerbe Middle School ended the year with a blast by shooting off handmade rockets.
With the assistance of instructors Tom Bell and Jennifer O’Neal, students first built and then launched solid fuel rockets donated from Pistco in order to gain insight to Rocketry. Rocketry is a powerful tool for students to use through incorporating science, technology, engineering and math into a fun, engaging and challenging activity.
Students had to build the rockets to be aerodynamically sound and could test the limits of Newton’s Laws.
In order for rockets to fly, the students had to work in teams and follow specific construction guidelines. Each team had the responsibility of launching the rocket and collecting valuable data. The instructors said that by launching the rockets, students got the chance to see science and math come to life.
