Food Lion on East Broad Avenue (Business U.S. 74) allowed more than 100 kindergartners from East Rockingham Elementary School to tour the grocery store on Friday.
Bryan McLaurin, store manager, said that the Store Tour is a program that Food Lion does once or twice a year to teach children how a grocery store works.
When the students arrived, they were given a bag filled with crayons, a coloring book and a pencil.
The six classes were divided into groups and sent to different departments in the store to learn about different aspects of the grocery world.
There were 12 teachers and four parents that accompanied the students.
Those teachers were Candace Everett, assistant teacher; Yolanda Sawyer, teacher; Sherri Holloway, assistant teacher, Laura Frye, teacher; Rhonda Francis, teacher; Patty Bowden, assistant teacher; Kendall Sanders, teacher; Ashley Britt, assistant teacher; Andrea Kinsey, teacher; Ashley McNeill, assistant teacher; Tessie Womack, teacher and Cindy Dawkins, assistant teacher.
The parents that attended were Brent Barbee, Jim McDonald, Carlos Johnson and Lacy Hogan.
The managers that helped teach the students were the Customer Service Manager Angel Stubbs, Assistant Customer Service Manager Debra Sparks, Produce Manager Keisha Estridge, Market Manager Adam Coble, Grocery Manager Scott Wilbanks, Assistant Manager John Lowery, Deli Manager Nikki Martin-Prince, Retail Pricing Coordinator Vanessa Martin and DSD Receiver Kim McPherson.
“I love the Food Lion Tour. They do a good job showing the children the behind-the-scenes workings of a grocery story,” said Sawyer.
At the front of the store, the students learned how to scan groceries. In the produce department, the children learned how to tell if fruit is fresh and how food gets from the farm to the table. They then moved on to learn about how to save money by comparing prices and also how the shelves are stocked. In the meat department, the children learned where different types of meat and fish come from.
They then travelled to the back of the store where they learned about the trucks that ship the food to the store and what happens to the boxes and packaging. In the dairy department, the children learned about refrigeration and dairy products before moving to the deli department where they got to decorate their own cupcake.
Michael Barbee, 6, said that he was having fun and Gabrial Johnson, 5, said his favorite part was learning about the back of the store.
The teachers were given a package which held information about Food Lion’s other community programs and also Certificates of Achievement to give to the students.
