Democratic Women to put politicians on catwalk

Elected officials in Richmond County will be modeling Belk fashion for Richmond County Democratic Women on Oct. 25.

Local politicians like Rockingham Mayor Gene McLaurin will parade Belk sweaters, ties and shoes for a fundraiser that will benefit Richmond County Red Cross Chapter and scholarships.

FATZ Cafe will serve dinner during what Democratic Women chairwoman Pam Dillman is calling a meet-and-greet. The event will be held at Liberty Place, 214 E. Washington St., Rockingham, and will begin at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and $14 at the door.

“Belks has just opened their doors to us,” said Dillman. “They are fabulous.”

Dillman said the fashion show will be unique in that the models will be approachable and will be hanging out with the dinner crowd. They will show off clothing, shoes, jewelry, make-up and accessories.

“This is what Richmond County should be doing all the time,” said Dillman. “We are trying to bring the community forward to help each other out.”

In an effort to form partnerships, Belk Department Store of Rockingham is teaming up with the Democratic Women in a mutually-beneficial fundraiser.

“I think it’s a good opportunity for people to come out and support the politicians,” said Robin Hutchinson, sales team manager at Belk. “People will see Belk’s most wanted fashions of 2012. It’s going to show what Belk has to offer.”

The scholarships will be given to an early college student and a high school student. Dillman said the Democratic Women filled used water bottles with dimes and collected these. The bottles hold $36 and there are more than 60 of them. The scholarships will be awarded at a banquet in May.

“We are trying to start a foundation,” said Dillman. “Each year the scholarship will be named after a Democratic woman and this year it’s named after Mary Swann, who is a phenomenal woman and holds a doctorate in education. She is retired now but continues to be a mentor for women and men. I’m thrilled she’s still involved. She’s very community oriented.”

If you would like to purchase advance tickets, you can call Dillman at 910-895-2774, Swann at 910-582-4429 or Priscilla Sanders at 910-995-3418.

Staff Writer Dawn M. Kurry can be reached at 910-997-3111, ext. 15, or by email at dkurry@heartlandpublications.com.

Someone please explain this to me... what does "democratic women", Ms. Dillman, and Belks (one of the most expensive retailers in this town) have to do with politics... or better than that... a specific party? This article should have never been printed in the paper (without a "paid for by..." political party, and definitely in the regular news! Where does this fit in?

Mr. Robert Kennie Robinson, 81,116 Robinson Lane, Bennettsville, SC, died Saturday, June 15, 2013, at his residence.

He was born November 16, 1931, in Marlboro Co., son of Johnny Robinson and Viola Helms Robinson. Mr. Robinson worked maintenance for W.D. James for 27 years, along with his farming and attended Sandhills Wesleyan Church.

“He was a Great Man”, Papa was the best papa, daddy, and husband ever. Papa worked hard his whole life. He believed that a man should work hard and provide for his family. He loved and thought the world of his grandchildren. As long as papa could drive his tractor and work on his land, he was a happy man. There was nothing he would not do for his family. He gave all his love to his wife, children and grandchildren. Thank you papa for teaching us: to be good to others, never taking anything that doesn’t belong to you and to always be honest; as he always said, “a man’s word is all he has.” We will miss you everyday for the rest of our lives. We know you are in heaven, driving your new John Deere tractor and working on your new land. Thank you for being our papa. We will cherish all the sweet memories you have left us; we love you so much!

Visitation will be Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at Harrington Funeral Home, from, 6 to 8 p.mn

Funeral will be 3 p.m., Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at Sandhills Wesleyan Church with Rev. Jamie English and Rev. Mike Locklear officiating. Burial will follow at Nebo Wesleyan Church Cemetery.
