A family nurse practitioner with nearly two decades of nursing service to Richmond County has joined FirstHealth Richmond Medical Group – Internal Medicine & Family Care.
Tonya Eteo, FNP-BC, now works with Stephen Chiu, M.D., at the practice located at 809 S. Long Drive, Suite H, Rockingham.
“During much of my nursing career, I have not had the opportunity to follow patients, post-hospitalization, to find out what their outcomes were,” Eteo said. “In my current position, I am able to enjoy a partnership with my patients, managing their care while getting to know them on a personal basis. I won’t just be treating a symptom any longer, but providing a lifetime of care.”
Two Richmond County nursing leaders who have worked with Eteo over the course of her career say she brings a rich professional background and a passion for quality care to her work with FirstHealth.
“Tonya is a very dependable and autonomous clinician,” said Tammy Brigman, R.N., BSN, clinical director of the Emergency Department at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital. “She communicates well with providers, co-workers and patients. She also understands the challenges that patients face and focuses on their needs.”
“Tonya is clinically very knowledgeable and is known for her attention to details,” said Allison Duckworth, R.N., Richmond Memorial’s chief operating officer and nurse executive. “She is a real patient advocate who always provides the highest quality of care.”
Eteo received an associate degree in nursing from Richmond Community College and her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She earned her M.S. degree in nursing, family nurse practitioner, from Frontier Nursing University in Hyden, Ky.
Her first professional nursing experience was with Richmond County Hospice, where she served as a staff nurse, CNA supervisor, admissions coordinator and clinical coordinator. She later worked as a staff nurse on a medical floor at Marlboro, South Carolina, Park Hospital, in the intensive care unit at Sandhills Regional Medical Center in Hamlet and on a medical-surgical floor at Richmond Memorial Hospital.
She returned to Richmond County Hospice in 2007 as an on-call nurse and then spent five years as a staff nurse/charge nurse in the Emergency Department at Richmond Memorial, the position she held until joining FirstHealth Richmond Medical Group – Internal Medicine & Family Care.
Eteo is nationally certified as a family nurse practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
