Kelly Elizabeth Smith of Rockingham and Christopher Alan Avant of Winston-Salem were united in marriage on June 16, 2012, at First Baptist Church in Rockingham. Dr. David M. Jordan, former pastor of First Baptist Church, officiated the 5 p.m. ceremony.
The bride is the daughter of Richard and Jan Smith of Rockingham and the granddaughter of Richard Smith Sr. and the late Zoe Smith of Rockingham and Doris Allen. She is a 1997 graduate of Richmond Senior High School and a 2011 graduate of Aveda Institute in Chapel Hill. She is currently employed as a Licensed Aesthetician with Carolina Eye Associates of Pinehurst.
The groom is the son of Rose and Alan Avant of Lumberton. He is the grandson of the late G.T. and Marie Avant and the late Adelaide W. Erxleben. Chris serves as the Assistant Director of Environmental Services at Forsyth Medical Hospital in Winston-Salem.
During the ceremony, the bride was given in marriage by her mother and father.
Kelly wore a bridal gown of dupioni silk designed by Martina Liana. The gown featured a ruched drop waist silhouette with a ruffled A-line skirt. The skirt was embellished with a chapel length train.
Bridesmaids wore a midiori dupioni trumpet style gown by Jim Hjelm. The gowns featured a ruffled halter neckline.
The bride’s sister, Caroline Smith of Rockingham, served as the Maid of Honor, while Leslie Steen of Rockingham was the Matron of Honor. The bride chose Marisa Chapin of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Marie Hodges of Rockingham, Holly Littlefield of Rockingham and Jill Sharpe of Garner as her bridesmaids.
Honorary bridesmaids were Renee Byrd of Clayton, Christina Carlson of Edgewater, Md., Jolene Cooper of Freeville, N.Y., Amanda Martin of Chapel Hill and Hana Petrea of Lakeview.
Reagan and Rhiannon Sharpe of Kure Beach served as flower girls.
The groom chose his father, Alan Avant, as his best man. Groomsmen included Stephan Avant of Charlotte, Jayson Bussard of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Matthew Russell of Pittsboro and Scott Smith of Greenville. John Critcher of Oxford and Larry Russell of Pittsboro served as ushers.
Ring-bearers for the ceremony were Harrison and Landon Wellons of Burlington.
Ceremonial music was provided by organist Don Greene of Rockingham, pianist Judy Harris of Rockingham and soloists Cameron and Matthew Russell.
The reader was Thomas Sullivan of Charlotte, while Kacy Friend of Greenville assisted with the register. Hillary Williams of Wilmington was in charge of programs.
The Smith-Avant wedding was under the direction of Cheryl Lampley, Pam Denson and Debbie Wrenn.
Following the ceremony, a dinner and dance reception was held at the Fair Barn in Pinehurst. Reception greeters were Ruthie and Milton Smith.
The couple enjoyed a wedding trip in Charleston, S.C., and will reside in Kernersville.
