Sheila Sellers, left, President of the Hamlet Tree and Beautification Group, and Cathey Thomas, President of the Woman’s Club of Hamlet, presided over the dedication ceremonies in memory of Ruby Bruce at the Woman’s Clubhouse on Sunday. The group landscaped the grounds of the Woman’s Clubhouse in memory of Ruby Bruce who was past president of both groups. Participating in the program were Mike Quick, Orlando Molina and Nancy Norton of the Tree and Beautification Group; Orene Coward, Catherine Huggins and Betty Saunders, Ladies Trio from Temple Baptist Church; Hamlet City Councilman Tony Clewis, and Dava Martin and Robbyn Sumpter of the Woman’s Club of Hamlet. Bruce’s family, husband C.L., daughter Cathy Bream and son Lawrence, were present for the ceremonies, along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to these organizations Bruce was active in Keep Richmond County Beautiful and the Richmond County Planning Board. Speakers remembered her dedication to environmental causes and her 45-year career as a nurse. The outdoor program beside the new landscaping was followed by a reception at the Clubhouse hosted by the Woman’s Club.
