The fun family event Richmond County children and businesses look forward to each year is returning to Browder Park in Rockingham next Wednesday for the spookiest holiday of the year.
On Oct. 31, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Trunk or Treat will take place at Browder Park in Rockingham, at 1211 Rockingham Road.
Trunk or Treat is an annual Halloween event at which businesses decorate the trunk of a car or truck and pass out candy while children and their parents trunk-or-treat in a safe environment.
“This is a great opportunity for businesses to advertise and to give back to the community at the same time by providing a fun, safe trick or treating experience for the kids,” said Kim Williams, event coordinator for the City of Rockingham. “At this point I have 18 trunks signed up. Some of them are Maness Tire, Phil’s Automotive, JC’s Trailer Sales, Leath Library, Fire Department, Rockingham Police Department, Jackson Hewitt Tax Service, Medical Center Pharmacy, BoJangles, American Legion, Rick & Al’s Car Wash, Richmond County, Champion Ford, Griffin Chrysler, Dieffenbach, and Smith & Stuart Insurance Agency.”
According to Williams, last year’s event boasted 21 trunks.
Terry Lewis, owner of Maness Tire & Automotive at 611 Airport Road in Rockingham, said he and his employees are looking forward to the event.
“This will be our third year,” said Lewis. “We thoroughly enjoy it. We do it as a group and quite a few employees like to get involved. It’s something we look forward to. Plus it gives kids a safe place for Halloween.”
Lewis said his employees have been doing most of the work to collect candy and decide on decorations for their truck. They also set up a promotional tent.
“We are taking a truck loaded with candy,” said Lewis. “And we’re going to decorate a tent. Sometimes it’s cold or it rains. The tent kind of gives you the same feeling as stopping by someone’s house. The kids have a good time and get candy. Last year we had a vampire. Sometimes it’s scary but it’s always fun.”
Partnerships between businesses and the City of Rockingham thrive on the event, and business owner Lewis gives credit where it is due.
“The city does a good job with this and so does Kim Williams,” said Lewis. “She organizes the whole thing and it’s huge every year.”
Lewis and other business owners encourage everyone to stop by at Browder Park where Halloween is made fun and easy for the chaperons.
“It’s much easier on the parents,” said Lewis. “It’s a safe environment and everything is within reach, plus you get to see your friends and customers.”
