CAMERON — The Richmond Senior boys basketball team once again fell behind its opponent in the first quarter.

Like it has five other times this season, Richmond rallied for a victory, this time against Union Pines Saturday night.

The Raiders trailed by eight at the end of the first before outscoring the Vikings by 19 over the next 16 minutes to pull away for a 69-54.

“It was a good win,” Richmond coach David Laton said. “We got more aggressive in our man-to-man. We started off in a zone.

“Every opponent is different and every game is different. We are going to do what works against a particular opponent.”

Shydamion Ellerbe scored a team-high 18 points, while Kendo Wallace chipped in with 17 for the Raiders. Jordan Richardson netted 11 in the win.

Richmond (6-1) will return to the court when it travels to face off against Camden Military Academy at 7:30 p.m. today.

Richmond drops fifth straight

CAMERON — Union Pines held off a second-half rally by Richmond Senior to claim a 38-36 nonconference win Saturday night.

The Vikings led 27-13 at halftime before the Raiders (2-5) came storming back in the final 16 minutes. Richmond tied the contest at 36 but were unable to take the lead. Richmond coach Victoria DeFrate said her team had a chance to knot the game in the closing moments, but couldn’t convert at the free-throw line.

“If we could have played the whole game like we did the second half, it could have been a different game,” DeFrate said. “The way they played in the second half was the best I have seen them play all year.

Stephanie Johnson scored a game-high 23 points for the Vikings (4-5).

Richmond will play host to South Robeson at 6 p.m. Wednesday before participating in the Holiday in the Pines at Pinecrest.

Richmond takes ninth in wrestling tourney

RAEFORD — The Richmond Senior wrestling team placed ninth in the “Pin that Fool” tournament at Hoke County Saturday.

The Raiders finished with 114 points. South View was first with 320 points, followed by Laney, Scotland, Gray’s Creek and Cape Fear.

Trinity Hunt had the best finish for Richmond, taking second in the 106-pound division. Randy Altman and Devontae Watkins were third in the 120- and 145-pound class. Jacob Staub finished fourth at 182, while Deion Davis was fifth at 220.

Hunt was 3-1 during the tourney, losing to Laney’s David Bostan 11-0 in the finals. Altman was also 3-1, losing a 6-1 decision to Joshua Greene from Terry Sanford. Watkins finished 3-1, losing by pinfall to Alex Palinski of Cardinal Gibbons.
