CHAPEL HILL — Despite finishing second in the Southeastern Conference, the Richmond Senior football team earned the No. 1 seed in the 4AA Mideast pod when the playoff brackets were released by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Saturday evening.
This marks the first time the Raiders have been placed in the East Region since the 2001 season.
Richmond (9-1) will open the postseason at home against Cary, which finished the regular season with a 5-5 mark. The Imps were tied for fourth in the Tri-Nine Conference.

The winner of the Richmond-Cary clash will face either Fuquay-Varina (6-4), the pod’s No. 4 seed, or Green Hope (6-5), the fifth seed. The Bengals edged the Falcons 21-17 on Sept. 28.
The 4AA Mideast pod includes three other SEC schools. Hoke County (9-2) is the No. 3 seed and will play host to conference foe Pinecrest (5-6), the sixth seed. The Bucks defeated the Patriots 35-7 in the teams’ regular-season finale Friday night.
Lumberton (5-5) grabbed the seventh seed and will travel to face Jack Britt, the No. 2 seed. Earlier this season, the Buccaneers (9-2) defeated the Pirates 27-0.
Of the four opening-round contests in the 4AA Mideast pod, only the Richmond-Cary battle is not a rematch of a game earlier this season.
Scotland (9-1) earned the No. 1 seed in the 4A Mideast pod and will open against East Chapel Hill (5-5).
The NCHSAA released the starting times for the football championships Monday morning. The 4A classification contests will be played at the University of North Carolina’s Kenan Stadium.
The 4A title tilt is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Nov. 30, while the 4AA championship game is set for 11 a.m. Dec. 1.
RSHS soccer team to open playoffs on the road
ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Senior boys soccer team earned the No. 4 seed out of the Southeastern Conference and will travel to face Heritage in the first round of the 4A state playoffs.
The Raiders and the Huskies are slated to play at 6:30 p.m. today.
Heritage finished the regular season with a 14-7 record and are the second seed from the CAP-8 Conference. Richmond enters the postseason with a 11-5-3 mark.
The winner of tonight’s contest with face either Holly Springs (12-8) or Riverside (8-10) in the second round.
Pinecrest, the SEC regular season and tournament champions, will face Clayton in Southern Pines. Lumberton, the No. 2 seed from the SEC, will play host to South View, while Hoke County, the third seed from the SEC, will open the playoffs at home against Enloe.
Raider cross country teams run in regional meet
RAEFORD — The Richmond Senior boys and girls cross country teams participated in the 4A East Regional meet at the Carolina Horse Park in Raeford.
The boys squad finished 15th, while the girls were 14th. Brandon Gibson was the top finisher for the Raiders, coming in 34th with a time of 17:34. Maurice Oneal was 82nd, completing the course in a time of 18:40.
Ana Rivers was clocked with a time of 25:04 to finish 87th in the girls race. Cassie Smith was 107th with a time of 27:57.
Wrestling practice set to start
ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Senior wrestling team will begin practice Wednesday.
Anyone interested in participating should contact coach Earl Nicholson. In addition, Nicholson said any current members of the Richmond football team who are interested in participating are encouraged to come out once that season is concluded.
The Raiders are slated to open their campaign Nov. 23 with a two-day event at Monroe High School.
Nicholson also announced the Richmond County AAU Youth Wrestling team will have an organizational meeting and accept signups 6 p.m. Thursday at Raider Gymnasium.
The squad is open to anyone from 5 to 17 years of age and this year’s team will also practice with the St. Andrews College Knights Kids Wrestling Club every Monday from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
