ROCKINGHAM — Jalen Almond netted two goals and four other players each scored a goal as Richmond Senior defeated Purnell Swett 6-0 in a Southeastern Conference matchup Tuesday night.
Brandon Ingram, Juan Onesto, Armando Garcia and Sergio Zapata scored the other goals for the Raiders. Tyler Dove and Logan Deese split time as Richmond’s goalkeeper in the shutout.
“We kicked it around pretty good in the second half even though we only scored two times,” Richmond coach Bennie Howard said. “Everyone got a chance to play, so hopefully that means we won’t have tired legs against Lumberton.”
The Raiders improve to 9-3-2 on the season and 3-3-1 in league play. They will play the Pirates at 7 p.m. today in Raider Stadium on Senior Night.
Carpenter, Denham still alive in tournament
PINEHURST — The doubles team of Abbi Carpenter and Haleigh Denham won their two matches in the opening day of the Southeastern Conference tennis tournament Tuesday at the Pinehurst Country Club.
In the opening round, Carpenter and Denham downed Purnell Swett’s Jordan Jacobs and Joyce Cummings 6-2, 6-4. In their second round matchup, the duo upset the third-seeded squad of Amanda Daniels and Hunter Thaggard from Hoke County, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. They will play Piper Davis and Brittany Jenkins from Pinecrest noon today.
The victories allowed Carpenter and Denham to advance to next week’s 4A East Regional hosted by Terry Sanford in Fayetteville.
In other action from the SEC tournament, Richmond’s Summer Jacobs and Peyton Hunt were eliminated from the singles competition by two Scotland players. Sallie Wegner cruised past Jacobs 6-0, 6-0, while Kailey Godwin downed Hunt 6-0, 6-1.
The Raiders’ other doubles tandem of Caroline Kirkland and Katy Shelley received a bye in the first round after being seeded fourth. In their first match, Kirkland and Shelley were beaten by Pinecrest’s Josie Lee and Kaitlyn Newman 0-6, 0-6.
Richmond finishes third in meet
LAURINBURG — Brandon Gibson finished the course at St. Andrews in a season-best 17:28 to take ninth in a tri-school cross country meet Tuesday afternoon.
Maurice Oneal took 13th with a time of 18:42 and Randy Altman finished six seconds behind his teammate to come in 14th place. The Raiders were third in the meet behind Pinecrest and Scotland.
In the girls meet, Morgan Tedder and Ana Rivers recorded personal bests with times of 22:12 and 23:55, respectively. Tedder was seventh, while Rivers took 12th place.
The girls team scores were not available at press time.
Patriots roll past Raiders
ROCKINGHAM — The Pinecrest volleyball team swept Richmond in three games Tuesday night in a Southeastern Conference match.
The Raiders are now 10-9 on the season and 3-6 in the Southeastern Conference.
Richmond will conclude its regular season schedule 7 p.m. Thursday when it travels to Scotland.
Rockingham sweeps Anson Blue
The Rockingham girls volleyball team defeated Anson Blue 25-20, 13-25, 15-11 in the opener before cruising 25-16, 25-16 in the nightcap.
The leading servers for Rockingham were: Makenzie Ward with 29 points, Cher Morse with 21 points, Nalee Jacobs with 17 points, Ally Roberts with 15 points and Nicole Beggs with 11 points.
Hamlet splits with Anson Orange
The Hamlet and Anson Orange girls volleyball teams split its match Tuesday afternoon. Hamlet won the first game 27-25, 25-19, before Anson Orange rebounded in the nightcap to win 25-17, 23-25, 15-9.
The leading servers for Hamlet were: Tatyana Gould with 24 points and an ace, Altman Griffin with 18 points, Mya Holiday with 15 points and two aces and Shaquae Chambers with 13 points.
Hamlet (6-2) will return to action Monday against Anson Blue.
