The Hamlet City Council on Tuesday issued a proclamation honoring Baltimore Ravens inside linebacker Dannell Ellerbe.
Ellerbe, who was born in Cheraw, SC and moved in Hamlet, NC, attended Richmond Senior High School before attending the University of Georgia. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Ravens in 2009 and is now considered to be an important player in this year’s Super Bowl XLVII against the San Francisco 49ers. The Ravens were the victors.
“The City of Hamlet is exceedingly proud … ,” the proclamation said. Mayor Jeff Smart said that he is so excited that Ellerbe remembers his home town and wished congratulations to Ellerbe and his family.
Ellerbe’s stepfather and mother, Robert and Valerie Covington, accepted the proclamation for Ellerbe who was not in attendance. “I feel honored,” Robert said.
Valerie said she felt, “great — everybody is really excited.”
“Honestly it’s been awesome, great, unbelievable,” Dannell Ellerbe told Daily Journal Sports Editor Shawn Stinson, a few days after the big game. “How ever many ways you can say awesome is how I feel right now.”
The former Richmond Senior standout led the Ravens with nine tackles in its 34-31 win over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII.
Ellerbe will get a plaque in his honor on the wall at the Hamlet Memorial Park.
The City Council also reappointed Tammy Kirkley as the City Clerk. Kirkley left the position for personal reasons about four months ago. “There were no problems and no issues,” Kirkley said.
In Kirkley’s absence, Gail Strickland, Hamlet’s zoning manager, filled her spot.
“It feels right,” Kirkley said.
City Manager Marchell Adams-David said that they went through the proper channels and hiring process. Kirkley submitted a resume along with the other applicants, Adams-David said.
All of the council members expressed their gratitude towards Strickland for taking up the reins in Kirkley’s absence and also expressed their joy to have Kirkley back in the City Clerk position.
In other matters, the council:
• Approved the advertisement of the Tax Delinquency List which lists all Hamlet residents who have not paid property taxes.
• Set a public hearing for next month to consider decreasing the speed limit on 177 South before the 74 bypass going into Hamlet.
