ROCKINGHAM — Haleigh Denham was the lone bright spot for the Richmond Senior girls tennis team in its Southeastern Conference match with Lumberton Thursday afternoon.
Denham extended her singles winning streak to three with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Lizzie Branch in the No. 4 singles match.
It was Richmond’s only conquest on Senior Day as the Pirates rolled to an 8-1 win.
“After we won yesterday, I was disappointed to lose,” Richmond coach Paula York said. “We played well Tuesday against Purnell Swett and we got a win against Hoke. We played well but Lumberton is a good team.”
Callie Carter cruised past Caroline Kirkland in the top singles match 6-1, 6-2. Abby Cain downed Katy Shelley 6-3, 6-0, while Abby Kinlaw knocked off Abbi Carpenter 6-3, 6-1. Kaylynn Leggette defeated Summer Jacobs 6-2, 6-1 and Lane Hickman stopped Peyton Hunt in the final singles contest 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles, Carter and Cain combined to beat Kirkland and Shelley 8-1. Kinlaw and Branch edged Carpenter and Denham 9-7, while Leggette and Hickman blanked Jacobs and Hunt 8-0.
“We lost to Lumberton 5-4 earlier this season and I was hoping we would be able to spin it around our way and get the win,” York said.
Richmond (2-9, 2-6) will close out its regular season with two road contests next week. The Raiders will face Pinecrest at 4 p.m. Tuesday before travelling to Laurinburg to battle Scotland at 4 p.m. Thursday.
Richmond snaps 4-game skid
RAEFORD — The Richmond Senior volleyball team ended its four-game losing streak with a 25-14, 23-25, 25-13, 25-9 victory over Hoke County Thursday night.
The win improves the Raiders to 9-7 overall and 2-4 in Southeastern Conference action.
“We served really well,” Richmond coach Shellie Wimpey said. “I hope after tonight’s game we can keep winning.”
Richmond will return to action 6 p.m. Tuesday when it plays host to Purnell Swett. The Rams knocked off the Raiders 3-1 in the teams’ first match this season.
Raiders roll past Bucks in JV football
RAEFORD — Miles Grant scored four touchdowns and Shavar Little added another three scores as Richmond routed Hoke County 56-6 in a junior varsity football game Thursday night.
After allowing 26 points in their last outing in Week 5 against West Forsyth, the Raiders limited the Bucks to one score and have surrendered 32 points all season.
“They played really well once again tonight,” Richmond JV coach Jason Norton said. “Both sides of the ball were a little rusty but that is to be expected after taking a week off.”
The Raiders (6-0, 1-0) will return to action 7 p.m. Thursday at home against Purnell Swett.
