Fiesta Brava owner Armando Torres has struggled over the past couple of years to rebuild his torched restaurant but, despite his own worries, he still looks for ways to give back to the community.

The restaurant is opening its doors to animal lovers on Wednesday, and hosting an all-day bash called “Pesos for Pets” to benefit the Humane Society of Richmond County.

“We’ll have music, open mics, corn hole games and a 50/50 drawing,” said Allison Sweatt, HSRC foster care, outreach and rescue coordinator.

The restaurant will be donating 20 percent of all sales that day to the shelter.

“If anyone has donations for the shelter, or wants to drop off items that the shelter needs, this is the place to bring it on Wednesday,” said Torres.

“Of course, we need money,” said Sweatt. “We also need dry food, wet kitten food, medium sized travel crates for rescue transport and we really need flea and tick treatments. Now that summer is here, we’re seeing a big increase in fleas and ticks. That can be dangerous and cause the animals to become anemic if not treated. We would greatly appreciate donations of any of these items.”

Torres said that he loves animals, one of his own dogs is a rescue that someone dumped at the Lions Club park.

“The Humane Society has always been a great partner to our restaurant,” said Torres. “Allison (Sweatt) has always invited us to sell hot dogs at shelter events and, when the restaurant burned down, selling hot dogs was our only income for a while. Those invitations have been a great help to us, and I want to return the favor by hosting a special event here for the shelter — to show our appreciation.”

Fiesta Brava is located at 522 East Broad Avenue (across from O’Reilly Auto Parts). Wednesday hours will be from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. For more information about the event call the restaurant at 910-895-5732 or the shelter at 910-895-0335.
