SOUTHERN PINES - A rough third quarter doomed the Richmond Senior men’s basketball team on the road Friday night at Pinecrest, as the Raiders fell to the Patriots, 71-62 in a Southeastern Conference Tournament championship game.

Richmond (17-8) trailed Pinecrest by juast one point at halftime, 26-25. But the Patriots hit the first seven shots of the third stanza - including a pair of 3-pointers - en route to outscoring the Raiders 27-13 in the quarter.

The Raiders did make a run, cutting the Pinecrest lead to three with about three minutes left in the contest. But the Patriots were able to hold off the Raiders down the stretch.

Too many turnovers and poor free throw shooting dogged the Raiders, according to coach David Laton. Richmond shot just 6-of-16 from the charity stripe.

Will Freeman led Richmond with 18 points. Jordan Richardson added 15 points off the bench and Tyquan Breeden chipped in with 12.

The Raiders open NCHSAA Class 4AA playoff play Monday night. They are tentatively scheduled to travel to Apex for a 7 p.m. game.
