Whitney Watkins, granddaughter of Fannie Young Watkins of Rockingham, and a key member of the Bouncing Bulldogs Jump Rope Team, recently dazzled along with her teammates at the 2012 World Jump Rope (WJR) Championship on the campus of George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
With the youthfulness of this year’s team members, the Chapel Hill-Durham based team won gold in the Junior and Senior Division Group Team Shows and captured more than 207 medals including, 81 gold, 48 silver, and 40 bronze medals among a field of 475 competitors from 10 different countries. Whitney received 16 gold medals including the Single Rope Individual All-Around in the Junior Female Division, as well as Single Rope and Double Dutch Team All-Around.
Back to defend their world title and improve their performance, the Bulldogs rose to new heights in the 2012 WJR Championship winning 12 Grand World Trophies in addition to earning medals in nearly every speed and freestyle event. Whitney won two first place Grand World trophies in Double Dutch-Junior Division and Open Double Dutch Triad Freestyle. The Bouncing Bulldogs remained World Champions for the seventh time bringing the gold to the Carolinas as global ambassadors.
“This may be our best tournament performance in 25 years,” said Coach Ray Frederick Jr.
Whitney’s involvement in rope skipping has taken her throughout the U.S. as well as internationally, traveling to India, Sri Lanka, England and France.
She is the daughter of Mosby Beecher and Deborah Douglas Watkins of Chapel Hill.
