The Hamlet Senior Center is gearing up for a special barbecue and bake sale fundraiser, set to be held between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday.
The barbecue, which was also held last year, is sponsored by the board of the Senior Games of Richmond County.
According to Pete Wheeler, a Senior Games coordinator, the barbecue will be prepared by Seaboard Station of Hamlet.
“They provide us with our opening ceremony meal every year as a donation, so we stay with them,” she said. “They do an excellent job. I know they cook Boston butt and chop it up, so I know it’s a good thing.”
Plates are $7 each, and the center will deliver orders of 5 or more. Proceeds will go toward the preparations required for the Senior Games.
During the same time, a bake sale will be held by the Hamlet Shakers Cheerleaders. Cakes, pies, cookies, brownies and other baked goods prepared by the cheerleaders will be available during the event. Proceeds from the bake sale will assist the Hamlet Shakers in their future endeavors.
“We’ve got a lot of things coming up,” Wheeler said. “We’re going to be cheering at the Hamlet Cheer Day on Dec. 8, and we’re also going to be cheering on Dec. 6 at the countywide Senior Christmas Party at Cole Auditorium.”
Wheeler added that she particularly enjoyed the fellowship involved in past fundraisers.
“(I like) being able to do something like this to help raise money. There are some awesome seniors down there. Our cheerleaders, we’re really close, we have a lot of good times together. This is just one thing we can do to keep the seniors going in this county.”
