Dear Editor,
While Christmas has become many things to many people it can never truly be separated from its historical roots, the birth of Jesus Christ. Though the early church never celebrated his birth, they did rejoice in and proclaim the reasons for it.
One of those reasons is that God wanted to tell us that he loved us (John 3:16). Who but God would send his son to die for sinners like me? Jesus said he came to seek and to save that which was lost as Isaiah-53 had foretold.
The “good news” told to the shepherds that night was that “a savior was born” just as the Hebrew scriptures had predicted in hundreds of details (Micah 5:2). God became a man without ceasing to be God so that as a man he might die and that as God his death would have infinite value (John 20:28-31).
Friends, what are you going to do with God’s gift this Christmas? “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23).
